Chevy's Big Block L89 Tri-Power Engine was introduced in the late 1960’s. A 427 Big Block powered the 1967 Corvette coupe and accelerated from 0 to 60 miles per hour in approximately four seconds. In drag racing, when properly tuned, acceleration time was 11 seconds, to 125 mph in a quarter-mile distance, with a power output of approximately 550 horsepower.

The Hemi 426 was the first engine to officially use the "Hemi" name, a word Chrysler trademarked. All Chrysler Hemi engines, of the 1960s, displaced 426 cu. in. Although just 11,000 Hemi engines were produced for consumer sale, due to their relatively high cost and poor street-use reputation, the engine became legendary and "Hemi" became one of the most familiar automobile-related words in the United States.

The Ford Single Overhead Cam (SOHC) 427 V8 engine, familiarly known as the "Cammer", was released in 1964 to recapture NASCAR dominance from the Chrysler 426 Hemi engine. NASCAR effectively legislated the SOHC engine out of competition (despite permitting the Hemi). This was the only engine ever banned from NASCAR. Nevertheless, the 427 found its niche in drag racing!
